Cambodia is a poor country, but…
Once upon a time, we have forgotten one little thing in a cafe on Serendipity Beach (it is the “beach of eating” in Sihanoukville, Cambodia). The thing was not expensive, but very necessary. Seven dollars—trifle, but it is a big sum for Cambodians.
Next evening we were going along the same beach seeking where to eat tonight. (We did not eat in our 5* hotel because we want to feel local exotic.)

Suddenly some boy about 10 years old pulled us out of the flow of tourists. He was served barracuda steaks for us yesterday.

“Hello. You have been here yesterday and have forgotten something.” He went out somewhere, returned and brought our little thing. 🙂
We were veeeeery surprised.
Sure enough, all subsequent evenings we had dinner only in his family cafe and gave big tips—for wonderful food and… honesty.

On Serendipity Beach of Sihanoukville, this dish costed 3$.

We love the Cambodian cuisine especially all the fresh seafood in Sihanoukville. And make sure you also venture to ‘Otres Beach’ as well quieter and equally good fresh seafood. Also if you venture to the Cambodian coast in search of tasty treats then venture to the famous crab market in Kep.

It looks beautiful!
It’s wonderful that they found and returned your thing to you. I’ve often found that it is in the most rural of places that people have the most honest hearts. They are happy and satisfied with their lives and therefore are more immune to outside influences that bring thoughts of greed. And of course, great of you to repay their kindness.
